How to make a Birdcage from a Paperback Book.

Hello Everyone.

Time for another tutorial I think.

Today I'll be showing you how to make a Birdcage from a paperback book.

Cornerhouse 115 is a family business and you'll be seeing my lovely grandma's hands in the images demonstrating each step, so a round of applause for her please.

To begin, get a paperback book that you wish to upcycle and remove the cover from the front, back and spine and line the spine of the book to face yourself. It's also worth manipulating the spine to make it easier for it to meet itself when it's finished.

From the left hand side (what is the top of the book) take the corner and fold at a 90°degree angle, to meet the spine of the book.

Next, take the newly folded edge and fold again so that the flat edge meets the spine again.

Repeat these two folds throughout every page of the book and you will begin to see the birdcage shape take form.

Make sure to crease each fold to achieve a nice shape and defined edges. It can be tricky to make the folded edges meet the spine the further you get through the book but persevere, it will be worth making the extra effort for your final piece.

You can see how the spine is beginning to curl around, as I mentioned at the beginning the first and last page will need to meet each other at the end.

Continue until every page is folded. Then glue the first and last pages together to complete.

You will now have a folded birdcage ready to decorate.

Now your ready to decorate. I've included some images of our completed birdcages as an example but let your creativity flow and decorate your birdcage with whatever colours or materials you desire.

Why not make a Christmas Birdcage?

Or a Wedding Birdcage.

This one even has a butterfly.

You can even make birdcages in various sizes by using different sized books or cutting the paperback before folding.

We hope you've enjoyed this tutorial, and have fun making your own. Thank you for reading.
